A man has been jailed after killing his friend and attacking his friend's mother as she tried to protect her son.
William Spence, 39, beat Kevin Jones with a hammer and then injured Mr Jones' 75-year-old mother.
The attack took place in the victims' house in Buxton Road, Dudley, on 5 November, 2011.
Spence, of Fullwood Crescent, Dudley, who denied murder, was jailed after a trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court and must serve a minimum of 17 years.
Mrs Jones suffered an ankle injury as she tried to protect her son, police said.
Speaking after the sentencing Det Sgt Harry May said Mrs Jones had "endured the horror" of returning home to find her son being attacked.
To protect him, she lay on his injured body, but the attack continued, he said.
"There was nothing she could do to save Kevin and she lay there and saw her son slip away in her arms, an ordeal which no parent should ever have to go through," he said.
